We're delighted to welcome back one of our favourite bands for their third appearance at Rugby Roots.
Once the bad boys of folk and rock, Oysterband have grown over the past few years into the role of musical custodians and godfathers of folk. Collaborative tours with rising young stars under the banner of The Big Session; a Big Session "live" album with June Tabor, Eliza Carthy, The Handsome Family, Show Of Hands and more, and finally the annual Big Session festival which hasn't yet failed to sell out. And there have been gongs, awards, nominations...
Oysterband occupy an unusual position in the world of music, combining folk sensibility and acoustic instruments with rock dynamics and sharp, engaged songwriting. The line up here features Al Scott standing in for guitarmeister Alan Prosser who's not available for the concert, Scots fiddle ace lan Telfer, drummer extraordinaire Dil Davies, bassist/cellist Chopper and charismatic frontman John 'JJ' Jones.
Oysterband emerged from an amateur ceilidh band and their career has grown exponentially to include festivals and tours in 35 countries across Europe, Asia and N America. They have recorded 14 studio albums, including one with June Tabor; and are involved in a collaborative project called The Big Session and host a festival of the same name each year in UK. Oysterband’s recent CD, "Meet You There" and "Oxford Girl and Other Stories" both met with well deserved critical acclaim.
The passion and energy of their live performances has become legendary. With a hard-earned reputation as one of Britain's great live acts, Oysterband have built a substantial following across of the world and a catalogue of strong songs that stand the test of time.
This is a standing gig and full electric band performance.
Two days before the concert Oysterband's Ray Cooper, aka Chopper, will be appearing at the Merchants Inn, Rugby. Details here.
