Hi all,

Just a quick reminder that we have our old friends ColvinQuarmby back at the Lawrence Sheriff School venue this Saturday, 28th January. Tickets are selling well so don’t leave it too long. As usual, you can buy on line via the website www.rugbyroots.com (10% booking fee applies) over the counter from Sounds Music, Church Street, Rugby, or as mailing list members, you can call me on 01788 567338/07768 310601 to reserve for collection on the door. Tickets are £12 and doors open at 7:15 for a 8:00pm start.

ColvinQuarmby are old friends of ours and we always look forward to their concerts here, their music defies categorisation, its very different from the “folkier” acts that we usually present, it’s original, superbly crafted songs reflecting the ups, the downs and the absurdities of everyday life, with fine musicianship, five piece harmonies to die for, and a totally unique performing style. Please come along, it’ll be a great show, and we can expect some new material from the forthcoming album “CQV” which will be available soon.

This time CQ will be supported by the excellent Derby based duo David Gibb and Elly Lucas.

We’ve been busy updating the Rugby Roots website with details of forthcoming concerts with performances from double BBC folk award nominee Lucy Ward (headlining this time after supporting Uiscedwr back in December) Luke Jackson, Little Johnny England, Ray Cooper (AKA Chopper from Oysterband making a welcome return to the Merchants Inn, and the awesome Peter Knight’s Gigspanner (of whom CQ’s Marion says “Heavenly music, truly inspiring and what it’s all about. I have been to the well and feel nourished” by the way). Tickets for all these events are available. The full list up to November is shown below…. and we have just fixed a date for Martyn Joseph’s TENTH appearance at Rugby Roots, but we’re not telling you what it is yet )

That’s all for now. Hope you’re all doing well. See some of you on Saturday

Hi All,

Just a quick note to wish you all a very Happy New Year again. Have a great time this evening however you’re seeing in 2012.

We’re back in business on 28th January with the return of the mighty ColvinQuarmby at Lawrence Sheriff School. Tickets are selling well for that one so don’t miss out. As usual tickets are available from Sounds Music, Church Street Rugby, by snail mail from yours truly or on-line. All details are at www.rugbyroots.com

In case you’ve not encountered ColvinQuarmby……..

ColvinQuarmby features the brilliant song writing abilities and energy fuelled performance skills of Gerry Colvin (vocals / acoustic guitar) Nick Quarmby (bass / vocals) Martin Fitzgibbon (drums / vocals) Allen Maslen (guitar/vocals) and Marion Fleetwood (fiddle/cello/vocals).

“A heady and potent mixture of driving acoustic rhythm, laced with liberal helpings of folk, country, skiffle, an inherent and intelligent use of the pop sensibility, topped off with some simply irresistible harmonies.” Froots Magazine

Gerry Colvin’s songs have an unmistakable English lyrical content, with the priceless ability to wittily observe seemingly ordinary and occasionally mundane aspects of everyday life, and marry them to beautiful melodies, which stay in the memory long after first hearing. The band have established a reputation as one of the best live acts around, and have played at some of the biggest festivals in the country. In 2009 they were voted second best act at the Cropredy festival (second only to the mighty Richard Thompson and ahead of Seth Lakeman).

“Gerry Colvin is a writer of great substance who is able to give us something that has been largely missing in English Music for a long time. His subjects and characters are clearly defined and his songs create strong images and stories which can make us both laugh and cry in the same breath.

Coupled with his manic delivery and performance and with the perfect band to bring these songs to life – Martin Fitzgibbon’s tight articulate drumming coupled with Nick Quarmby’s unique melodic bass style combine to create the perfect vehicle for Gerry’s songs.

This band is unique and unforgettable. The songs are brilliant. They should be a household name. Go see them.” Phil Beer, Show of Hands
